
The first half of the race went well. Inspite of gale force winds on some parts of the course I went through half way in 2:30:55. This was roughly the time I was targetting, and I was feeling good.
But by 24km I knew I was in trouble. I had developed glute pain than usually only appears at 28km on a "normal" bad day. I kept pushing on, but crashed at about 25km. This coincided with the time for my next gel. I rationalised that perhaps some extra food would help, so in addition to my gel I ate two extra mini moro bars that I had stashed as emergency supplies. The next few km were very slow, but I eventually started to recover a little and finished in 5:13:04.
