Up the track from Mangatepopo to the saddle on the edge of Tongariro South Crater. Snow first encountered less than half way along the track. Followed new circuitous route that bypasses the old Devil's Staircase. Climb is quite easy - perhaps a better name is "Nana's Rise"! Wind was very strong and lots of fine sugary snow near the top. Stopped for less than 5 minutes at the top - took photos then sheltered behind a rock to eat nut bar. Got cold very quickly. Wind-blown snow stung on the face when coming down. Glissaded a couple of short sections - perhaps should have done more. Rain set in once we were half way back to the car.
